About Me.

My name is Averill Hovey and I am Licensed Professional Counselor, Board Certified Art Therapist, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapist.

Life is full of change, transition, and growth. It is a constantly evolving journey. Throughout these shifts in our experience, we formulate or return to intrinsic patterns of behavior to help us navigate, pull through, or survive. Often times, these (subconscious) strategies do not fit our current experience, and the feedback we receive from partners, friends, work, or the world feels confusing. I work with clients of all ages to tease out these behaviors that present as stressors within the phases in our life process.

No matter the client, I work to meet each individuals’ needs through utilizing a strengths based approach to support self-esteem development, aid in the therapeutic process, and allow an arrival closer to the authentic self.

Our selves are made up of many parts, much like our bodies. They are emotional, chronological, reactive, and often are dis-integrated from our whole self. In drawing awareness to our emotions and the parts of ourselves that are activated by them, we can begin to integrate and establish new neurological pathways to help ease more gently and openly into growth.

My approach to working with you will be to look closely at layers of attachment, as well as past and present experience of emotion and relationship. I utilize somatic, mindfulness, and play therapy interventions as well as bring the insight of yoga into my sessions. As an art therapist, I offer a multitude of materials to help dig deeper into imagery and metaphor that can help you become more present with your challenges in an externalized and manageable way. I implement and include EMDR protocol and resourcing where appropriate to aid in the alleviation of both psychological and physiological trauma responses. Throughout your time with me, I will support you in identifying successful coping strategies, while providing you with the tools you need to gain more self-awareness.

My areas of specialty are Adolescent Populations (12+),  Adults, Couples, LGBTQIA Issues, Gender Identity & Sexuality, Trauma, Attachment, Grief & Loss, Terminal Illness & End of Life Care, Educational Systematic Stress, Development, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Challenges, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, & Athletic Performance/ Stress.

I currently work both in private practice, and as a faculty member at Naropa University.

I look forward to journeying with you.
